The whale shark

 

  • The largest known Whale Shark is 62ft long (18.8 metres), and they can live up to 130 years!
  • They are filter feeding carpet sharks and have HUGE mouths 
  • Luckily, they only feed on plankton and small fish!
  • The Whale Shark's conservation status is 'endangered' meaning it is at risk of extinction.
  • Whale shark numbers have declined drastically due to being illegally hunted for their skin, fins and oil.

Shortfin Mako Shark

  • The largest Shortfin Mako ever caught was 14.6ft (4.45m)
  • The Shortfin Mako is one of the fastest sharks, travelling at speeds of 30mph and over
  • They tend to feed on squid and fish in open water, where they spend most of their time
  • They have the ability to raise their body temperature higher than the surrounding water, which assists with their high speed
  • They are found Worldwide, including the UK, mainly off the Southern and Western Coasts
  • Prized for their meat, skin and fins, Shortfins are hugely overfished
  • The Shortfin Mako's conservation status is now 'endangered'
